Associate Professor Of Native American Studies And Director

Company: University of Montana
Location: Missoula
Posted on: March 22, 2020

Job Description:

The College of Humanities and Sciences at the University of Montana invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor with a joint appointment in Native American Studies and a field related to Tribal Geographic Information Systems and water resources for Fall, 2020. The successful candidate will also serve as the Director of the Elouise Cobell Land and Culture Institute, with teaching and research responsibilities and roles related to Native American land and cultural preservation. UM and the College of Humanities and Sciences embrace diversity as a core value. Applications from persons with diverse backgrounds are especially welcome.--The Elouise Cobell Land and Culture Institute officially opened in October 2014. The Institute is named in honor of Elouise Cobell, the leader from the Blackfeet Tribe who in 1985 embarked on one of the largest and most complicated class-action lawsuits ever brought against the U.S. government. The Cobell Institute offers unprecedented technology and learning environments, and is ideally situated for opportunities for collaboration with tribal colleges, tribal governments, federal agencies (e.g., USDA Forest Service, USDI Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Fish & Wildlife Service and Bureau of Indian Affairs) and other regional institutions. The Institute provides flexible classroom designs, advanced distance-learning platforms and a multiscreen theater room that will emphasize storytelling traditions in Native American culture. One highlight of the facility is a Star-Gazing Round Room, which uses the same technology as the American Museum of Natural History and NASA, and immerses viewers in an interactive display of the environment and the sky. It can be used for traditional storytelling and for astronomical teaching.--The successful candidate will be expected to work towards fulfilling the Cobell Institute mission of (1) providing project-based learning and tribal and community outreach using high-level tools essential to the future of Native American communities, (2) training students and researchers of the Institute in land use; resource mapping; economic analysis; history; and cultural and language preservation related to Native American issues and those of rural and urban areas of the region, and (3) seeking partnerships with community organizations (including business and economic development), tribal colleges, and other partners to broaden the horizons of future generations and to engage students in projects of real-world problem solving for local communities as they pursue their own education.--A doctoral degree with proven expertise in Tribal Geographic Information Systems and water resources is required. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the candidate's area of expertise. Other responsibilities include mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, conducting and publishing scholarly research, seeking extramural funding, and providing professional service to the department(s), university, and community.----The Department of Native American Studies, housed in the College of Humanities and Sciences, has an active undergraduate degree program and strong ties to many other academic disciplines on campus. The Faculty offers both discipline-based and interdisciplinary teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and faculty work often with students in the UM Interdisciplinary M.A. and Ph.D Programs. The collegial learning environment in the Faculty focuses on effective teaching, critical and creative scholarship, and the integration of scholarship and teaching. The department is committed to an ethos of local involvement, global engagement, and intercultural awareness and provides a positive, inclusive, and mutually supportive working and learning environment for students, faculty, and staff.
